The world of remote collar dog training can be controversial. Contrary to mistaken views, e-collar training can be very gentle and humane. Properly used, a dog can learn to avoid dangerous situations and be allowed many more freedoms, all due to proper e-collar methods. Yes, sometimes a dog does need a harsh correction. This is only use for dangerous behaviors that need to be permanently exterminated, like avoiding poisonous snakes or chasing cars. But for most training with a remote collar, gentle settings should be enlisted.
- My use for the remote collar are for the following needs:
- Dog chases cars /livestock /bikes etc. The dog needs to learn that these objects “bite” so that he no longer wants to chase.
- Dog jumps on people and positive methods are not working. This is common in homes with kids and young dogs. The dog needs a mild correction to decide that jumping (and mouthing) is no longer fun.
- Dog is “counter surfing”. The dog has learned that the yummy goods are on counters, now he needs to learn that counters “bite”.
- The dog bolts out of the house to enjoy a nice run down the street. He is not motivated by positive methods to “come” or stay on his property.
- The owner wants the dog to enjoy off leash freedom on their property, hikes, safe country environments. The dog must learn he HAS to “Come” or “Leave It”. Without a remote collar, the dog will have no reason to believe the owner has any power. The dog must believe the owner can “reach out and touch him” from a distance. Using only positive methods here will put the dog at risk of danger when the dog chooses his own “positive” reward that is in fact a danger to him.
- Snake Proofing. Dogs who live near poisonous snakes must learn to fear & avoid all snakes. To do this, the dog must be remote collar trained at a high level. He must fear for his life so he does not die from a poisonous snake bite. This type of training must be done properly and by a professional.
If your dog falls into any of the above categories, please hire a professional dog trainer who is well versed in the remote collar training. Common names for this method are: E Touch, Remote collar, E-collar, Shock collar
